pH stands for Potential Of Hydrogen. It was originally defined by Danish biochemist Soren Peter Lauritz Sorensen in 1909 as a logarithmic measure of hydrogen ion concentration, pH = -log[H+]. Instead, I'll say that in your body, it stands for your potential for Health.
The scale runs from 0 to 14. The low end, 0 indicates really strong or complete acidity. At the high end, 14 indicates really strong or complete alkalinity. In the middle, 7.0 indicates that the substance is neither acid nor alkaline – it’s neutral. Water is considered to be neutral on the the scale.
When talking about the pH of your body, we are talking about the fluids inside and outside your cells. The ideal level for your internal environment should be 7.365.
Should I be concerned about my acid/alkaline balance?
Yes, you should be concerned. Life is all about balance and your acid/alkaline balance has a profound effect on your health. Any imbalances, either too acidic or too alkaline, for long periods of time are not very well tolerated by the body.
In fact, the body has regulatory mechanisms (breathing, circulation, digestion, hormonal production, etc.) that serve the purpose of managing and balancing pH levels. This homeostatic mechanism that maintains a constant level of 7.365 in the blood works by depositing and withdrawing acid and alkaline minerals from locations within the body including the bones, soft tissues, body fluids and saliva. If your acid/alkaline balance moves either too far to the acid side or too far to the alkaline side, cells become poisoned by their own toxins and die.

Nothing does well in an overly acidic or alkaline environment. In fact, at either end of the scale life as we know it can not exists. Just like acid rain destroying a forest or how alkaline wastes polluting a stream; an imbalance, either to acidic or alkaline, will continuously corrode body tissues. A continued imbalance will interrupt all cellular activities and functions. Improper acid/alkaline balance interferes with our potential for health and wellness!

Testing and Monitoring your our acid/alkaline balance
Monitoring your acid/alkaline balance gives you a indication of how well your body is doing at survive your lifestyle. These levels are indicators of how your body is responding to the foods you eat as well as other stresses. Remember that the actual acid or alkaline level of your internal environment affects how your body functions.
The pH of saliva and urine offers a window through which you can see the overall balance in your body. I am going to recommend you use pH test strips. This is the easiest and quickest way you can test your acid/alkaline balance. These test strips are inexpensive and are available at most health food stores or at your local pharmacy. This paper can be used to test saliva or urine, and the color of the paper will change to reflect your acid/alkaline balance.
You simply compare the color of the paper to the color scale on the side of the package to reveal your acid/alkaline balance. You may test your pH everyday! Testing twice daily for several days and logging the numbers will give you a general idea how your body changes.
Your salivary acid/alkaline balance should stay in a range of 6.8 to 7.5 for healthy body function. The best time to test your saliva is approximately 1 hour before a meal and 2 hours after a meal. If your urinary pH fluctuates between 6.0 to 6.5 in the morning and between 6.5 to 7.0 in the evening, your body is functioning within a healthy range.
When saliva acid/alkaline balance falls below 6.8 or urine falls below 6.0, nutrients are not being absorbed, your body becomes more toxic and your body’s cells are soaking in acid. This generally goes unnoticed for years and the acid waste begins to silently corrode blood vessels, destroying cells and even entire organs. Fatigue is probably the major symptom or complaint of an overly acidic body.
